GO Kingfish and the COVID-19: Update #5
    Apr 9, 2020

    Dear Kingfish Families: Update # 5 -April 09 2020
The Greater Ottawa Kingfish priority is the health and well-being of all our student-athletes and staff. We will continue to closely monitor and evaluate developments of the coronavirus (COVID-19) and follow guidance from Ottawa Public Health (OPH), Ministry of Health, and Public Health Ontario.

We would like to update you on the following:

    GO pools and season updates:

  • City of Ottawa has closed all pools until June 30, 2020.
  • uOttawa has closed its facilities until June 29, 2020.
  • All GO programming is cancelled for the remainder of the season.
  • All GO fundraising is cancelled for the remainder of the season.
  • All events and competitions are cancelled for the remainder of the 2019-2020 swim season. <
  • GO will offer limited summer programming in July and August – Details will be provided if/when pools open.
  • Swim fees update:

The Board of Directors reviewed future swim fee installments with the objective of doing what is best for the club’s long-term sustainability and respectful treatment of all our members. The analysis considered GO programming, expected operating expenses until our fiscal year-end of August 31, 2020, as well as the desire to keep salaried coaching staff on contract in order to ensure the continuity and success of our club.

As previously communicated, we suspended the collection of the May installment of swim fees. In addition, we will suspend the collection of the June installment. Families that have paid swim fees in full at the beginning of the season will receive the appropriate refund. Our bookkeeper is working very hard and it is our goal to process all refunds by May 15, 2020.
We thank you for your patience and understanding.

    GO Kingfish employees:

GO remains committed to employing all our salaried coaches to the end of the fiscal year. GO has temporarily laid off and issued a Record of Employment to all our part-time seasonal employees to allow them to access the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB).
The club is exploring all options regarding financial stability accessible to not for profit organizations including applying for government subsidies available now and in the coming weeks.

    Communication moving forward:

In order to encourage some routine for our student-athletes and to stay connected,
    GO will continue to:

  • Offer group “Zoom Chats” for all groups.
  • Provide Monday Reminders with swimming related educational information.
  • Provide guidelines to stay physically active, with parent approval/permission and following COVID19 guidelines.
  • We hope everyone is doing as well as can be expected in these exceptional circumstances. Enjoy the long weekend and stay safe at home.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our Head Coach – Jason Allen at senior@gokingfish.ca or (613) 864-6485.

GO Kingfish and the COVID-19: Update #4
    Apr 1, 2020

    Dear Kingfish Families: Update # 4 -April 1 2020
The Greater Ottawa Kingfish priority is the health and well-being of all our student-athletes and staff. We will continue to closely monitor and evaluate developments of the coronavirus (COVID-19) and follow guidance from Ottawa Public Health (OPH), Ministry of Health, Public Health Ontario and the Ministry of Education.

We would like to update you on the following:

GO pool updates --- Notice of Cancellations:

    City of Ottawa
As of today, the City of Ottawa has closed all pools until further notice. Thus, practices will not be resuming until further notice. We expect weekly updates from the City.

    uOttawa:
uOttawa has closed its facilities until May 15, 2020. Thus, practices will not be resuming until further notice. We were going to use another facility during the planned maintenance closure of uOttawa which was scheduled to begin on April 25, 2020. We will provide an update on that other facility as soon as possible.

    Swim fees update:
The Board of Directors has been reviewing future swim fee instalments for May and June by considering programming, expected operating expenses for the next few months and ensuring the continuity of our club. Given the prolonged closure of our pools and the recent decisions by Swim Canada to cancel all sanctioned swim meets, we will suspend the collection of the May swim fee installment, regardless if we are back to swimming or not. Families that have paid swim fees in full at the beginning of the season will receive the appropriate refund. Please recognize that our bookkeeper will be working very hard to process those refunds as soon as possible. We thank you for your patience as we work through this unprecedented situation.

The Board of Directions will review the June instalment of swim fees at an upcoming meeting and communicate to the membership later in May once we have more updates from uOttawa and the City of Ottawa.

A decision about May and June instalments of swim fees will be made by the Board of Directors later in April and communicated to the membership as soon as possible. Families that have paid swim fees in full at the beginning of the season will receive the appropriate refunds, if and when it is decided that May and June instalments of swim fees do not need to be paid. GO Kingfish and the Coronavirus: Updates
    Mar 12, 2020

    Dear Kingfish Families:
The Greater Ottawa Kingfish priority is the health and well-being of all our student-athletes and staff. We continue to closely monitor and evaluate developments of the coronavirus (COVID-19) and follow guidance from Ottawa Public Health (OPH), Ministry of Health, Public Health Ontario and the Ministry of Education.

    Assessment Centres:
It was announced today, the City of Ottawa is getting one of the first six assessment centres for COVID-19. The assessment centres will be located at the Brewer arena, near Brewer Park and Carleton University. The centres will open within the next few days.

    Addressing Concerns:
News surrounding a virus-like COVID-19 creates anxiety and can be difficult for children to understand. It is normal for them to feel worried or have questions. Each one of us can help to clarify misinformation. They also need to be heard. They do not require detailed information, but they do need to talk about their feelings. Let them know they can ask questions. Answer honestly but make sure that the information is suitable for their age level. Remember, children are often listening when you talk to others about COVID-19. Reassure your Children!

OTTAWA PUBLIC HEALTH: Recommendation for Everyone
As a reminder, you can help Stop the Spread of Germs, including the flu and the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), by practicing healthy habits.

    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth unless you have just cleaned your hands
    • Cover your cough and sneeze with a tissue or into your arm, not your hand
    • If possible, stay home if you are sick
    • Avoid visiting people in hospitals or long-term care centres if you are sick
    • It is still recommended to get your flu shot if you haven't already as the flu virus is still circulating in the community

    GO Practices:
There is currently no plan to cancel practices. In that respect, GO will follow the directions and requirements of officials with the City of Ottawa, uOttawa, Swim Canada, and Health Canada. Obviously, this situation is rather fluid, and we will update families as soon as possible should events be cancelled.

Please follow the following guidelines during practice:
    • No swimming snorkels are to be used during practice moving forward – leave them at home
    • No sharing of water bottles
    • Shower prior to entering the water/deck
    • No sharing swim goggles or other equipment
    • Fist bumps/elbows bumps instead of high fives; or none • Respect others personal space
    • Cover up when coughing or sneezing
    • Stay home if you feel sick

    Team Travel:
Effective immediately, all Team Travel events are canceled. Thus, the Olympic Swimming Trails Team Trip scheduled for April 3-4, 2020 has been cancelled. We will evaluate the GO Kingfish Team Travel Policy again on April 6, 2020.

    Water and Corona Virus:
While the coronavirus has had a large impact on sporting events, including limiting spectators and cancelled events, more answers are emerging regarding the virus and water. According to an official statement by the Center for Disease Control, there is no evidence that the virus spreads to humans through the use of pools and hot tubs.

    March Break Travel:
Ottawa Public Health has posted some helpful information for families who are planning to travel outside the country during March Break. Follow the links below to stay informed.
    • Before you go away: Staying healthy and safe during March break travels
    • When you return: Guidelines for travellers who travelled outside of Canada

    Additional information:
For more information on the coronavirus outbreak, please visit the Public Health Agency of Canada. There is a lot of misinformation going around about the global situation. The primary authoritative source of information for all Canadians on COVID-19 is Canada.ca/coronavirus, as well as the COVID-19 Information Line at 1-833-784-4397.

GO Kingfish Team Travel Policy Updated Moving Forward
    Mar 12, 2020

    Parents/Swimmers:

The Greater Ottawa Kingfish Swim Club will not be offering any “Team Travel” events for the immediate future. Thus, the GO Kingfish Team Travel event to the 2020 Canadian Olympic Swimming Trials scheduled for April 3-4, 2020 has been canceled.

The Canadian Olympic Swimming Trials is a phenomenal event to watch, one that only happens every four years! We as a staff are very disappointed canceling this endeavour, however, we think the positives supersedes any disappointment. If any families would still like to attend the event on their own, please contact us (info@gokingfish.ca) if you would like to utilize one of our 50 tickets.

Again, the Greater Ottawa Kingfish will not be offering Team Travel events for the immediate future, thus, our Canadian Olympic Swimming Trials Team event scheduled for April 3-4 has been canceled.

Please contact me anytime if you have any immediate questions.

    Sincerely,

    Jason Allen

    Remembrance Day: November 11, 2019
    Nov 11, 2019

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks still bravely singing fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead: Short days ago,
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved: and now we lie
    In Flanders fields!

Take up our quarrel with the foe
To you, from failing hands, we throw
The torch: be yours to hold it high
If ye break faith with us who die,
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields

GO Blue and Orange Pentathlon: October 05
    Oct 5, 2019

    Parents/Swimmers:

It’s time for our GO Pentathlon this weekend. It’s a great event to see the evolution of swimming. We have 188 participants this weekend: 40-10/under, 80- 11/12, and 68 --13/overs. Thus, we will see how a swimmer evolves from an 8/9year-old to a 10/11year old, to a 12/13-year-old, to a 14/15-year-old, to a 16/17-year-old, and then finally to a young adult and even National Medalists. Pay attention and see the evolution of a student-athlete that might span 10-12 years.

    Please review the following:

Olympink Masters Sprint Challenge: Fundraiser for the Ottawa Breast Health Centre
    Apr 6, 2019

    About OlymPINK 2019
On April 7th last year, OlymPINK was launched. We like to think of it as the little swim meet that could. It was our inaugural swim meet fundraiser to support the important work of The Ottawa Hospital’s Rose Ages Breast Health Centre. We had swimmers. We had fans. We had breast cancer survivors. We had Olympians. But most of all we had spirit and a commitment to making a difference. That difference ended up being close to $19,000 raised towards crucial technology needs to help the Breast Health Centre.
That was year one. This is year two. And on Saturday April 6th, we’re going to make an even bigger splash. But we need your help.
If you’re wondering why you should support this swim fundraiser we have an easy answer for you. Look around your family, or your neighbourhood. Is there a relative, or a friend, or co-worker you know who is struggling with breast cancer? Chances are your answer is yes. Because 1 in 8 women in Ottawa will face a breast cancer diagnosis this year. That’s why it matters to ALL of us. In September of 2018, the brand new Breast Health Centre opened up on the hospital’s General campus and we were there with a cheque and our live painting of our 2018 OlymPINK swim event which we donated to the Centre

    University of Ottawa Maintenance-Pool Closing: May 12-May 27, 2018
    May 12, 2015

    Dear Kingfish Members and Families:

As you have been informed, our uOttawa pool will be closed for the period of May 12-May 27. We have been working hard to secure pool time for all members affected and are awaiting final “minor” confirmations from one pool. To see posted template schedules for the this period click here

We are trying to offer a variety of options to ensure that you have plenty of flexibility! If you cannot attend a practice at a certain location please talk to your coach to see if you can attend an alternate location with another group. We will do our best to accommodate all requests , however we only have limited space at some locations.

We understand that this is a challenging situation and inconvenient to our members . We’d prefer that our pool wasn’t closing, however, maintenance and updates to facilities are required and we will make the best of the situation.

There will be some minor "tweaks" so review your schedules!
Please contact me if you have any immediate questions.

UOttawa Pool Closing: April 22 -June 28, 2020
    Apr 22, 2015

The University of Ottawa pool will be closing April 23- June 28, 2020, for a brand new HVAC System(for air quality) and general overall maintenance. During this time, GO has secured other pools around the city to accommodate our training and keep or swimmers moving FORWARD!

We understand this is not an ideal situation, however, we can and will make the best of the situation! The system is over 40 years old and in need of updating for the safety of all participants with regards to air quality.

The staff has been working very diligently in securing appropriate pool time, alternate Strength Training time, and all other avenues associated with this closing. We thank you for your support and positivity moving forward.

Again, we acknowledge this is a long extended closing, however, with perseverance, positivity, hard work, fast-swimming in practice, and creativity we can make this a positive and powerful tool in making us all better!

If you have any questions regarding schedules and attending practice(s), please contact your respective coach immediately. We can work together (all groups) to make it work.

    Please Review:

*Training Schedules: all training schedules from April - July will be posted after March break
